The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has voted to extend the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). The Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2675, which extends UNAMA’s mandate for another year. The Council also expressed its support for the upcoming presidential elections in Afghanistan.
UNAMA was established in 2002 to help Afghanistan rebuild after years of conflict. The mission focuses on promoting peace, stability, and development in the country. It also provides support for democratic governance and human rights.
The Security Council’s decision to extend UNAMA’s mandate comes at a critical time for Afghanistan. The country is facing ongoing security challenges, as well as political and economic uncertainty. The upcoming presidential elections are seen as a crucial step in ensuring the country’s stability and democratic future.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the Security Council’s decision and reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting Afghanistan. He stressed the importance of the upcoming elections and called on all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and inclusive process.
