EAST LANSING, Mich. — A case in which a man was fatally shot after running toward East Lansing police officers with a knife has been sent to the Attorney General’s Office for review.
Officers had been called to Marcos Pizza on East Lake Lansing Road April 15 on reports of retail fraud at the store and a stabbing in the parking lot, according to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office.
When they arrived, officers found Isaiah Kirby armed with a knife and running toward responding officers. Officers then shot Kirby, who died.
This happened after Kirby allegedly stabbed Douglas Mielock multiple times during an alleged assault, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Michigan State Police have since turned in their findings to the prosecutor’s office for review, to determine if the use of force was justified and if charges against the officers are warranted.
However, according to the prosecutor’s office, Ingham County Prosecutor John Dewane cited he had a personal and professional relationship with Mielock, creating a conflict of interest.
In addition, consistent with their policy for all officer-involved shootings, the prosecutor’s office referred the case to the Attorney General’s Office for independent review.
