Donald Trump reportedly wants Russia and China's help
According to a recent report by the Financial Times, US President Donald Trump has allegedly asked China and Russia to help him fight against the power of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The outlet suggests that Trump made this pitch to Chinese President Xi Jinping during his recent trip to China. However, the White House has not yet provided any confirmation regarding this. It stated that the proposal might have been made during the Beijing state dinner, but no details are available in the White House readout of the event (via People).
In February 2025, Trump imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court. He accused the ICC of engaging in “illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel.†He added that the war crimes court “opened preliminary investigations†against the United States and his allies. Trump also accused the ICC of abusing its power and criticized the issuing of arrest warrants against Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel. He labeled the arrest warrants “baseless.†Trump conveyed that the ICC holds no jurisdiction over the US and Israel as the two nations are not members of the court.
In April that year, the Trump administration also threatened to restrict the entry of several British lawyers, including Karim Khan and Amal Clooney, into the US over the legal advice they gave to the ICC.
