HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WPTA) – Nearly 1,500 women gathered in Rockford, Illinois, on Saturday to break the Atlas world record of the largest all-female motorcycle ride.
Motorcyclist Sandy Hanson from Huntington says more than just one record was broken.
“We didn't break one,†she said. “We didn't break two.â€
“We broke three records.â€
Hanson said the other two records were “the most biker women parade formation in motion†and “most biker women on the longest parade of 31 miles.â€
Angie Hum, Hanson's friend and riding buddy, says they met through the Huntington chapter of a women's biker club called “Stillettos on Steel.â€
Hum said she originally had no idea how many riders were participating.
“I could not believe how many riders kept coming in,†she said. “We had no idea. They were lining us up, and they just came coming and coming, and we had no idea it was 1,433.â€
For Hum and Hanson, this experience meant more than just setting a world record. To them, it meant sisterhood and empowerment.
“Women to be together, I think it's just what we need,†Hum said.
“The day of the ride, it felt like there was so much electricity in the air,†Hanson said.
Kierstyn Jones is part of the Fort Wayne chapter of Stillettos on Steel. She also took part in the event and said the previous record for the largest all-female motorcycle ride was 1,002.
Jones says she was excited to blow the old record “out of the water.â€
“I got a long time left to live, and I told my husband I'll be chasing this world record for the rest of my life,†she said.
Like Hanson and Hum, Jones' favorite part was the people.
“Being surrounded by other women, coming from all different backgrounds, all different races, all different, two wheels, three wheels, it doesn't matter,†she said. “What matters is that we're in the wind.â€
“We're doing this together.â€
