World Cup opens as Atlanta excitement builds
Atlanta welcomes the World Cup as thousands of excited soccer fans crowd Centennial Olympic Park and local watch parties. Federal authorities have already taken strict security measures by grounding and confiscating multiple unauthorized aircraft flying near the festivities. Local venues plan to broadcast dozens of upcoming matches over the next month. Â
DECATUR, Ga. – Soccer fans and families gathered in Decatur for WatchFest to witness the opening matches of Day 1 of the World Cup.Â

Mexico fans celebrated a big victory over South Africa during the first game of the day. Fan Monica Vargas expressed love for the Decatur area, noting how amazing it is to bring everybody together. South African fan Stacey Schoman, who has lived in the U.S. for 10 years, shared that friends and family came to watch their team play despite leaving the match disappointed by the loss.Â
Decatur WatchFest plans to broadcast 60 matches throughout the month-long tournament as a free venue for families and sports fans. Event coverage will resume Friday at 6:30 p.m. with a live concert, followed by a broadcast of the United States match at 9 p.m.Â
