One man was killed in a shooting involving police Tuesday in South Omaha.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said officers responded to a disturbance near 19th and Bancroft streets around 8:45 a.m. during an attempted eviction.

A man in his 50s was agitated and officers heard the racking of a firearm. SWAT units arrived and attempted to negotiate with the man, who claimed to have a long weapon and 2,300 rounds of ammunition.

Heavy equipment was used to break open a second-floor window. The man went out of the window and began firing at SWAT units. SWAT shot and killed the man.

Iowa primary election results: Lahn wins GOP governor race

Polls closed Tuesday as Iowa voters cast ballots in the state's primary election.

Zach Lahn won the Republican primary for governor in a tight finish over Rep. Randy Feenstra. The other candidates were Eddie Andrews, Brad Sherman and Adam Steen.

Lahn will compete to replace outgoing Gov. Kim Reynolds, who announced earlier this year that she was not running for re-election.

Under Iowa GOP rules, the winner needed at least 35% of the vote to clinch the nomination. Feenstra conceded late Tuesday night, saying he called Lahn to offer his support.

Lahn will face Democrat Rob Sand in November. Sand ran unopposed in his primary and has served as Iowa's state auditor since 2019.

Iowa primary election results: Turek takes Democratic Senate primary

Voters also weighed in on the race for Iowa's U.S. Senate seat Tuesday.

Republican Sen. Joni Ernst announced she will not seek re-election, leaving an open seat. On the Democratic side, Josh Turek of Council Bluffs defeated Zach Wahls in the primary.

Turek will face U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson in the general election. Hinson has represented Iowa's 2nd Congressional District for the past five years.

The general election is expected to draw major outside spending, including a Republican super PAC pledge of $29 million.

Another state race of interest includes the Democratic race for Congressional District 4.

Omaha woman arrested after allegedly chasing man with crossbow

An Omaha woman is behind bars after authorities say she chased a man around an apartment complex while holding a crossbow.

Officers were called to 108th Street and Redick Avenue around 7 p.m. Monday on a report of a disturbance involving an armed woman.

Police said they found the suspect sitting with the crossbow near her. An officer asked what happened, and she allegedly said a man stole money from her mother, prompting her to bring the crossbow.

She was arrested and booked on suspicion of possession of a weapon by a prohibited person (not a firearm). As of Tuesday afternoon, she remained in jail and a court date had not been scheduled.
