World Health Organization Declares Coronavirus a Global Health Emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the outbreak of a new coronavirus in China a global health emergency, as cases continue to rise worldwide.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the announcement on Thursday after a meeting of the emergency committee in Geneva.

“The main reason for this declaration is not what is happening in China but what is happening in other countries,” Tedros said. “Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems and which are
