WAHPETON — Community members gathered April 14 at the Wahpeton Law Enforcement Center for a stop on the North Dakota Military Gallery Tour, where attendees shared stories, asked questions and learned how they can support the future museum project.
Dale Lennon, executive director of the State Historical Society of North Dakota Foundation, said the Wahpeton event was well-received and matched the strong engagement seen at other tour stops across the state.
“The attendees were engaged throughout the presentation and asked thoughtful, high-quality questions, which always makes for a meaningful discussion,” Lennon said.
According to Lennon, the Wahpeton stop brought forward several meaningful conversations, particularly about the Minuteman III missile and the transition to the Sentinel missile program. Attendees also discussed North Dakota’s growing role in the unmanned aircraft systems program and its importance in national defense.
Feedback after the event was positive, Lennon said, with several attendees expressing strong interest in the Military Gallery and a desire to remain involved as the project moves forward.
“This stop was a great example of how grassroots involvement strengthens the project,” Lennon said. “We received personal service stories unique to each individual, along with thoughtful suggestions for potential exhibits and interactive elements within the Military Gallery.”
Lennon said the Wahpeton stop helped build relationships and gave attendees a better understanding of how they can contribute artifacts, share stories or provide financial support for the project.
He added that the turnout and level of interest made Wahpeton one of the tour’s most positive stops so far, especially with the presence of a state legislator and several highly engaged individuals.
Construction of the $78 million Military Gallery began in July 2025. State lawmakers have contributed just more that $39 million toward the project, including a $20 million line of credit through the Bank of North Dakota. The campaign, led by PACE Fundraising, still has about $35 million left to raise. Completion of the facility in Bismarck is expected in late 2027.
