NEW YORK (WBNG) — Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is criticizing the Trump administration's role in the conflict with Iran.
The senator said the administration claimed the conflict would help make Americans safer, but instead has wasted billions of taxpayer dollars.
Gillibrand said New Yorkers have spent an extra $2 billion on gas since the beginning of the conflict. Nationwide, Americans have spent $50 billion, she said.
The senator said the results of the proposed peace deal are, “a worldwide embarrassment†for the country.
“The war has degraded military readiness, endangered our national security, and torn Americans' international credibility to shreds,†Gillibrand said.
Gillibrand said Iran's nuclear program will not be completely eliminated but instead has survived through negotiations and is in no better place than before the war began.
“It is possible that Iran is even more resolved to develop a nuclear weapon after this conflict,†she said. “We were told that Iran's military was decimated. Instead, they end the war wielding dangerous new leverage over global energy supply in the Strait of Hormuz, leverage they will continue to hold over the entire world. We were told that the Iranian regime would collapse under the pressure of America's military dominance.â€
