Active-duty military personnel and veterans receive free admission to any Alabama state park through the Parks for Patriots program.

The program is available at every state park in Alabama and provides free day-use entry year round as a way to show appreciation for military service.

The initiative gives military members and veterans an opportunity to enjoy a peaceful setting and spend time outdoors.

The only requirement is that visitors must be active-duty military personnel or veterans.

“It was started around 2017,” said Alabama State Parks director Chad Davis. “You know, one of the reasons that we wanted to do that was because they’re active in the military or veterans, designated spaces that they can go in for reflection and peace surrounded by nature. And it’s been well received.”

Alabama state parks also hold events throughout the year to celebrate and honor veterans, including one coming up soon.

“One big event that we usually have, and that’s around the 4th of July, is a event at Oak Mountain State Park and is a fireworks and celebration this year,” said Davis. “You know, of course, is special because it’s the 250th. But Oak Mountain State Park, will be one of the closest places that has a new world celebration for that.”

Visitors can donate to the Parks for Patriots program. Donations remain at the park selected by the donor. Donations can be made here,
