The Israeli military said today that its ground operations in Lebanon are extending into additional areas after crossing the Litani River in the south of the country.

In a statement posted on Telegram this morning, an Israeli military spokesperson said that forces had “crossed the Litani River and expanded attacks against Hezbollah north of the river, while operations are currently being extended to additional areas.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Friday that Israeli forces had crossed the river, located about 30 kilometers from the border, and that a large part of southern Lebanon had become a combat zone despite the declared ceasefire.

The Israeli army said today that it had “conducted a large-scale operation several days ago in the Shaqif Heights and the Wadi al-Slouqi area” as part of efforts to “strengthen operational control in southern Lebanon and remove the direct threat to the Galilee Panhandle and the town of Metula,” adding that “operations are currently expanding to additional areas.”

The statement added that a large number of troops had begun an offensive aimed at “expanding the forward defense line.”

On Saturday, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam accused Israel of pursuing a “scorched-earth policy” against Lebanon.

Clashes between Israel and Hezbollah continue on an almost daily basis despite a declared ceasefire that came into effect on April 17 but has not been effectively upheld.
