An Air Force non-commissioned officer has been recommended for the Army Commendation Medal after demonstrating exceptional leadership and courage during a high-threat deployment in the Middle East under Operation Spartan Shield.
According to official recommendation paperwork, Technical Sergeant James M. Doan of Lebanon Junction, an Air Force Security Forces NCOIC assigned to the 378th Air Expeditionary Wing, is being recognized by the U.S. Army for his extraordinary support to Army Security Forces operating alongside Task Force Iron Gray.
The recommendation was submitted by Capt. Robert T. Blundon, commander of Apache Company, 1st Battalion, 102nd Infantry Regiment, who praised TSgt Doan's “selfless service, courage and dedication to duty†during sustained combat operations and missile attacks in theater.
The Army Commendation Medal (ARMCOM) is a prestigious mid-level military decoration awared to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who distinguish themselves through heroism, meritorious achievement or meritorious service. While commonly awarded to Army personnel, the medal may also be presented to service members from other military branches whose actions significantly support Army missions.
In the recommendation, TSgt Doan was credited with forging an unprecedented partnership between Air Force Security Forces and Army Security Forces personnel. He reportedly organized and led joint training initiatives focused on combat medical response, tactical vehicle operations and battle drills designed to improve interoperability between the two branches.
Officials stated the training directly enhanced operational readiness and cohesion during one of the deployment's most dangerous periods.
That danger escalated during Operation Epic Furry, when the installation came under repeated enemy attacks involving more than 250 ballestic missiles, cruise missiles and one-way attack drones. During the assault, TSgt Doan worked alongside Army Security Forces teams to defend the base and secure critical Army positions amid the barrage.
The recommendation also highlights his role in developing emergency response procedures for base defense operations. Those procedures included plans for mass casualty response, cordon operations around hazardous areas and protocols for clearing unexploded ordnance left behind after attacks.
Military leaders credited those measures with improving survivability and maintaining order in addition to tactical leadership. TStg Doan reportedly played a key role in sustaining logistical operations under fire. He secured critical supplies, resolved network communication issues, and coordinated vehicle support that enabled Army personnel to rapidly disperse from the Logistics Support Area before incoming missiles and drone strikes impacted the area.
Commanders noted that the rapid movement capability likely saved lives by reducing troop exposure during enemy attacks.
The proposed citation accompanying the award recommendation states that TSgt Doan's actions “directly enhanced the readiness†of the Army's 1st Battalion, 102ne Infantry Regiment while bringing “great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.â€
The recommendation reflects the growing emphasis on joint-service cooperation in modern military operations, where Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps personnel frequently operate in integrated environments under real-world combat conditions.
If approved, the Army Commendation Medal would formally recognize TSgt Doan's exceptional performance during one of the most intense operational environments faced by U.S. forces in the region in recent years.
He is the son of Jeff and Regina Doan of Lebanon Junction. His wife, Janel, and two sons, Cole and Xander, reside in Arkansas.
