Liverpool and the French National Team have suffered a major blow as Hugo Ekitike sustained a serious injury during their Champions League quarter-final match against Paris Saint-Germain. Ekitike, the French striker, injured his right ankle in the 27th minute of the match at Anfield.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed concern over the severity of the injury, which has been diagnosed as an Achilles tendon rupture. This unfortunate injury will keep Ekitike out of action for at least nine months, causing him to miss the upcoming 2026 World Cup with France.
France National Team Manager Didier Deschamps also expressed support for Ekitike, acknowledging the impact this injury will have on both the player and the national team. Ekitike, who had scored a goal for France in a recent friendly against Brazil, will be sorely missed in future matches.
The injury occurred during a 0-2 defeat for Liverpool, sealing a 4-0 aggregate win for PSG. Ekitike was replaced by Mohamed Salah after being stretchered off the field. Despite the setback, Liverpool is determined to finish in the top five in the English League to secure a spot in the Champions League next season.
Ekitike’s absence will be felt by both Liverpool and the French national team, as he has been a key player this season with 19 goals for club and country. The Reds are now focusing on his surgery and rehabilitation to ensure he makes a full recovery.
