The Connecticut River riverfront will come alive Saturday for the beginning of a series of cultural and diverse free festivals for the rest of the summer that will start with a PRIDE celebration Saturday, and then weekend lineups that include celebrating the Caribbean, America's 250th, an Asian festival, Juneteenth and more.

The festivals celebrating the river between Hartford and East Hartford draw thousands each year.

“It's about connecting people with the Connecticut River,†said Michael Zaleski, president & CEO of Riverfront Recapture, the private, non-profit that runs the parks in Hartford, East Hartford and other area municipalities. “We are fortunate in greater Hartford to have this majestic river.â€

Zaleski said the river a natural resource that's “come a long way,†including being cleaner. He said the river starts in Canada, is 410 miles long and feeds into Long Island Sound.

It borders Hartford and East Hartford, some like to say it separates the cities, but Zaleski prefers to say the river unites them,

“This story is about more than events. It's about how the Connecticut River is being activated as a regional destination, how diverse communities are coming together through shared experiences, and how these events support local businesses, artists, and vendors while drawing people into the capital city,†said another spokesperson for the events.

The festivals are free, but there is food and other items for sale to support local vendors and artists.

Part of the goal is to bring people to Hartford. The activities are to take place at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza, Great River Park, and Riverside Park.
