QUINCY — A Chicago dance company brings high-energy break dancing to Arts Quincy's Arts and Culture Night.
The sixth annual event, provided by Blessing Health System, takes place 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Jackson-Lincoln Swimming Complex, 701 N. Eighth.
The free event features a meal, hands-on art activities and a live performance by the acclaimed Stick and Move Dance Company with its show titled “The Elements.â€
Known for its electrifying blend of breakdancing, contemporary movement, athleticism and storytelling, the company creates performances that inspire audiences through themes of strength, resilience, creativity and human connection.
“Not only will it be that high-energy break dancing that's nearly acrobatic — it's amazing to watch — but The Elements is really about showing you all the different elements that go into making a break dance performance. There's jazz. There's modern. Different types of dance go into what makes up break dancing,†Arts Quincy Executive Director Laura Hesseltine said.
“We've really wanted to bring this style downstate for some time to get people interested in this type of dance,†she said. “That we're able to bring it here free thanks to our donors is amazing.â€
The Quincy Art Center, Quincy Children's Museum, Quincy Public Library, Quincy Museum, Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County and Culver-Stockton College will offer interactive activities and educational experiences. Kohl Wholesale will provide sweet treats to enjoy during the evening.
“It's just a celebration, a way to get out and have a great time in the community,†Hesseltine said.
Arts and Culture Night — made possible through the support of the J.W. Gardner II Foundation, Blessing Health System and the Illinois Arts Council — grew out of ongoing work to provide arts programming to the community.
“We wanted to make more people in the community feel welcome to be a part of the arts organizations that exist in town,†Hesseltine said.
Grants and generous local sponsors support the family-friendly event.
“Whether you're getting creative, enjoying a meal with neighbors or watching an incredible break-dancing performance from Stick and Move, we want everyone to feel welcome and connected through the arts,†Hesseltine said.
“We want to see you participate in all of the things under Arts Quincy's umbrella, so we're talking the Art Center, the theater, the historical sites. There is a place for everybody in the arts.â€
