The City of Fairbanks is launching a major public art project that will transform City Hall with a new mural celebrating the cultures, history, and landscapes of Interior Alaska.

City officials say the large-scale mural is part of an initiative focused on biocultural heritage and climate adaptation in Arctic communities.

The artwork will cover the façade of Fairbanks City Hall and highlight the land, waters, languages, and living traditions that have shaped the region.

The mural is being created by Alaska Native artists Amber Webb, Lindsey Mayllard, Colleen Firmin Thomas, and Bethany Grant, with cultural guidance from Denakkanaaga and Native Movement.

Project leaders say the design reflects the Chena River watershed, seasonal cycles in Interior Alaska, and the many cultures connected to the area.

Officials note that City Hall, formerly the historic Main School building, has long served as a place of learning and community gathering, making it a fitting location for the artwork.

Community members are being invited to take part in the project during volunteer painting days scheduled for June 6 and June 7, beginning at 10 a.m. at Fairbanks City Hall on Cushman Street.

Organizers say no experience is necessary and all supplies will be provided.

City officials say residents are encouraged to stop by throughout the weekend to help paint the mural and learn more about the stories and traditions it represents.
