Syrian Government Announces Ceasefire in Idlib

The Syrian government has declared a ceasefire in the northwestern province of Idlib, the last rebel-held stronghold in the country. The ceasefire is set to begin on Thursday, following weeks of intense bombardment by Syrian and Russian forces.

The announcement was made by Russia’s defense ministry, which stated that the ceasefire is aimed at allowing civilians to evacuate the area and to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. However, it is unclear how long the ceasefire will last and whether all parties involved will adhere to it.

The province of Idlib is home to around three million people, many of whom have been displaced multiple times during Syria’s nine-year civil war. The recent escalation in violence has led to a humanitarian crisis, with hundreds of thousands of people fleeing towards the Turkish border in search of safety.

Despite the ceasefire announcement, air raids and shelling have continued in the region, raising doubts about the effectiveness of the agreement. The United Nations has called for all parties to respect the ceasefire and to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
