WHO Declares Coronavirus a Pandemic
The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. This decision comes as the virus continues to spread globally, with over 118,000 cases reported in 114 countries. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the organization is deeply concerned by the alarming levels of spread and severity of the outbreak.
A pandemic is defined as the worldwide spread of a new disease. The last time the WHO declared a pandemic was during the H1N1 influenza outbreak in 2009. The declaration of a pandemic does not change the organization’s response, but it is meant to emphasize the need for countries to take urgent and aggressive action to control the spread of the virus.
Experts are urging countries to prioritize containment efforts, such as testing, isolating confirmed cases, and tracing contacts. They are also advising individuals to practice good hygiene, such as washing hands regularly and avoiding close contact with sick individuals.
While the declaration of a pandemic may sound alarming, it is largely a procedural step that reflects the global nature of the outbreak. It does not indicate that the virus has become more severe or that the risk to the general public has increased.
