WHO declares COVID-19 a pandemic
The World Health Organization has officially declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. This announcement comes as the virus continues to spread globally, affecting over 100 countries.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated, “We are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity and by the alarming levels of inaction. We have therefore made the assessment that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic.”
As the number of cases and deaths rise around the world, health officials are urging countries to take immediate action to prevent further spread of the virus. The WHO emphasizes the importance of implementing measures to detect, test, isolate, treat, and trace contacts of confirmed cases to control the outbreak.
