As Kansas City embraces the FIFA World Cup, one local business is using the tournament to support a cause close to home.The Bar KC has launched a commemorative World Cup pint glass at its four locations, with a portion of each sale benefiting the Midwest Innocence Project as the organization celebrates its 25th anniversary.”I’m excited for what this means for our city,” said Tahir Atwater, executive director of the Midwest Innocence Project.The nonprofit works across five states to help overturn wrongful convictions and advocate for people who have been wrongly imprisoned.Beginning Thursday, customers can purchase the World Cup-themed glasses filled with beer, filled with soda or empty as a souvenir.”To help raise some money for a good cause that they’re doing,” said Amy Turpin of The Bar KC.The glasses cost $8 empty or with a soda, and between $11 and $13 with a beer. A portion of each purchase supports the Midwest Innocence Project.Turpin said the partnership is a way to combine the excitement surrounding the World Cup with community support.”We should be supporting all of those. We should be supporting each other,” Turpin said. “I think it’s great. As much as we can do and the bars can help people out, we’re in.”Organizers said the effort is focused as much on awareness as fundraising.”I hope that the word gets out through this promotion,” Atwater said.The commemorative glasses also give visiting soccer fans and local supporters a unique keepsake from Kansas City’s role as a World Cup host city.”We’re hoping we can bring people from all over the world to share in the celebration of the Midwest Innocence Project and all these great partners who do believe that innocence should be enough for our clients,” Atwater said.
