Police: Woman killed, teen employee hurt in Pleasant Hill grocery store shooting

A woman was killed and a teenager was injured in a shooting outside a Price Chopper in Pleasant Hill late Monday afternoon.Pleasant Hill Police Chief Tommy Wright said officers were called to the store around 4:30 p.m.Police said the woman, a 45-year-old who was shopping at the store, died at the scene.A 17-year-old male who works at the store was hospitalized after the shooting. Police said the suspect, who suffered a self-inflicted wound but survived, was taken into custody and also transported to a hospital.”There’s some type of motive here, but we just don’t know it yet,” Wright said. “We’re two and a half hours into the investigation.”The suspect, who police said is a 27-year-old man, is in stable condition.”We don’t believe he was a shopper. We believe he was somebody that was on the parking lot, based on witness statements that we have, as well as some video,” Wright said.Wright said a bolt action rifle was recovered by police on the scene. U.S. House Rep. Mark Alford, who represents Pleasant Hill in Congress, said his team was monitoring the situation. “My team and I are closely monitoring the situation following the shocking violence and Price Choppers in Pleasant Hill,” Alford said on social media. “We're grateful to law enforcement for the swift response. Leslie and I are praying for peace and comfort to the loved ones of the deceased, as well as quick recoveries from the survivors.”The woman was from Johnson County, Missouri, while Wright said the teenager is the Pleasant Hill area. It’s believed to be the first homicide in Pleasant Hill in at least two decades. “This doesn’t happen in Pleasant Hill,” Wright said. “This is not the norm, and so we want to make sure that we do a really thorough investigation, so that we do get our community answers. Our community deserves those answers. Our community is going to have to be patient with those answers, but we also need to know, is there some type of community interaction that could have prevented this? What can we do moving forward that will help us be more safer?
