The World Health Organization Declares Coronavirus a Global Pandemic
The World Health Organization officially declared the coronavirus outbreak a global pandemic on Wednesday. The announcement comes as the number of cases outside of China continues to rise, with over 118,000 cases in 114 countries and 4,291 deaths reported worldwide.
“We are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the alarming levels of inaction. We have therefore made the assessment that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
As the virus continues to spread rapidly, countries around the world are implementing strict measures to contain its spread, including travel bans, quarantines, and school closures. The WHO is urging governments to take immediate action to protect their citizens and prevent further transmission of the virus.
