At the age of 17, Cooper Lutkenhaus ran the fastest time in the world for 2026 in the outdoor 800 meters Sunday.
He beat an Olympic silver medalist in the process.
Lutkenhaus, a pro runner who just finished his junior year of high school at Justin Northwest, won his Diamond League debut by running 1:42.70 in Stockholm, Sweden. Canada's Marco Arop, the silver medalist from the 2024 Olympics, finished second in 1:43.11.
That was the second-best time of Lutkenhaus' extraordinary career. He announced himself as a world-class athlete by running 1:42.27 as a 16-year-old at the 2025 USATF Outdoor National Championships, where he beat American outdoor record holder Bryce Hoppel and American indoor record holder Josh Hoey.
It has been an amazing run for Lutkenhaus since he turned pro in August 2025 and signed a deal with Nike. In March, he won the world indoor title in the 800 by running 1:44.24, becoming the youngest world indoor champion ever and completing an undefeated season indoors.
Hoey is the only one in the world to run faster than Lutkenhaus in 2026, but Hoey's time of 1:42.50 came indoors. Lutkenhaus' PR of 1:42.27 makes him the 19th-fastest man in world history and is less than two seconds off the world record of 1:40.91 run by Kenya's David Rudisha in 2012.
