WASHINGTON (7News) — A gunman has died after opening fire on Secret Service agents near the White House on Saturyday.
Two people were shot, the gunman and a bystander, in the area of 17th Street and Pennsyvlania Avenue, Northwest, according to the Secret Service. The agency said the shooter pulled a gun from a bag and began firing shots. Secret Service returned fire, hitting the gunman. The agency said the shooter was taken to the hospital but died. No word on the bystander’s condition.
No agents were hurt in the gunfire.
FBI Director Kash Patel shared on X, “FBI is on the scene and supporting Secret Service responding to shots fired near White House grounds – we will update the public as we're able.”
President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time. The gunfire comes nearly a month after what law enforcement authorities said was an attempted assassination of Trump at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner.
The Secret Service posted online that it is investigating in the area of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, Northwest.

She writes on X that she was “in the middle of taping on my iPhone for a social video from the White House North Lawn when we heard the shots. It sounded like dozens of gunshots. We were told to sprint to the press briefing room where we are holding now.”
This happened just after 6 p.m. News crews are told to take cover.
