The United Nations has declared 2022 as the International Year of Glass in order to raise awareness about the benefits of glass as a sustainable material and its crucial role in various industries.
Glass is one of the most versatile and widely used materials in the world, with applications in construction, transportation, packaging, and telecommunications, among others. The UN hopes that by highlighting the importance of glass, countries will work towards reducing the environmental impact of glass production and promoting the use of recycled glass.
In a statement, Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, emphasized the significance of glass as a symbol of transparency, sustainability, and innovation. She urged governments, industry leaders, and civil society to collaborate in fostering a more sustainable and circular economy.
Throughout the year, various events and activities will be organized to celebrate the International Year of Glass and educate the public about the benefits of this remarkable material.
