TAMPA — The Tampa Bay African American Arts & Cultural Center is expected to break ground on a community project, but it still has a bit more fundraising to do to make it happen.
Renderings give a look inside what will soon be the 50,000-square-foot landmark at 2103 N. Rome Ave. in West Tampa.
The project is a public-private partnership with the Hillsborough County government. Organizers say it will be a place that celebrates the region's African American arts, culture, and heritage.
It will feature indoor galleries, a 600-seat indoor amphitheater and learning studios.
The board for the center says it is getting closer to its $30 million goal, and the center is having its first fundraiser next week.
“It’s not just about a building,” said the center’s Kayon Henderson. “What we're doing is building legacy. So, there's going to be youth education coming out of this. So we're gonna continue to raise capital funds because we want to make sure we can give everyone that opportunity to come and experience that history.”

The group's inaugural fundraising gala is next Saturday, June 27 at the Florida Aquarium. It’s from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. You can see more details in the Facebook post below.
