Seattle weather: 90-degree heat breaks record under World Cup spotlight

First-time visitors in town for Seattle's World Cup Monday game must have thought we've been lying about rain, fog and Juneuarys all this time.

As the first men's soccer game got underway at Lumen Field, temperatures at nearby Sea-Tac Airport rose to 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. That breaks a 1963 record of 88 degrees for the warmest on this date.

Egypt struck first in a game that ended in a 1-1 draw with Belgium. The high Monday in Cairo? Also 90 degrees.

Monday's ascent into summer heat marks the 15th consecutive year where Seattle has hit 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Only four years in this century have not featured a 90-degree day in Seattle. The last of those was 2011.

On average over the past 81 years, the first 90-degree day comes on July 3.

A heat advisory remains in place for much of Western Washington through 5 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
