DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (Valley News Live) – Several law enforcement agencies are searching for a man suspected of attempting to rob a bank Friday, June 12, 2026, in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
Police say a call came in around 12:15 p.m. for an attempted armed robbery at Midwest Bank. The suspect fled the area and ran into nearby woods.
Authorities describe the man as about 5-foot-8 and 180 pounds, wearing all black with a ski mask and shorts, and carrying a duffel bag. The weapon was confirmed to be a handgun.
A Minnesota State Patrol helicopter and multiple drones have been deployed to search for the suspect, and officers have left the original scene to look for him around town. Investigators say they have identified a vehicle connected to the case but have not released a description.
The situation remains very active. Police are asking anyone who lives or works in the area with security cameras to review their footage and contact authorities with anything suspicious.
Detroit Lakes Deputy Chief of Police, Robert Strand, said, “We believe he's out of the area. Now we're just going to start canvassing the neighborhood looking for residents that have cameras attached to their houses and their businesses. We have a suspect vehicle, so hopefully we'll get something. Or I should say a vehicle of interest. So, hopefully we get something out here in the near future once we get that identified. Right now, we're just trying to play off of what we have so far.â€
The victim is reported to be unharmed.

Strand added, “In a rural area like this, this is huge, this is how we survive. We can't do it alone. When you put a call out and you get these guys that show up like they did today, it speaks a lot. You know, just for how we work together and we're always there for each other. No questions asked. Just put the call out and you've got 4,5,6 guys from surrounding agencies, that's huge.â€
