JAKARTA – Formula One (F1) racer from Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton, said that he would support England and Brazil in the 2026 World Cup this summer.

Hamilton has a reason for backing the two countries who won the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

“Growing up in England, I loved watching Brazil play. To be honest, Brazil has always been my favourite team,” said Hamilton.

Hamilton, who was born and raised in England, was made an honorary Brazilian citizen in November 2022, to celebrate his deep affinity with the country.

The lifetime tribute to late Brazilian racing legend and three-time world champion Ayrton Senna, as well as his passionate advocacy for diversity and human rights, also factored into the decision.

He then discussed his admiration for Brazil’s colors, their culture, and the joy of witnessing the world-class quality of the team when he was a child.

“They are very cool. For me, (Brazil) is equally a favorite with England,” said Hamilton.

At the 2011 Brazilian F1 Grand Prix, Hamilton wore a special helmet designed to honor Senna.

Then, at the 2017 Canadian F1 Grand Prix, he received the original helmet that Senna had worn in the race, as a congratulatory message from the family of the late racer after equaling the record of 65 F1 pole positions throughout his career.

He always showed great respect for the country as a whole.

“I really appreciate their origins, many players come from the streets and play without shoes. There is something very special about the Brazilian culture,” he said.
