SWARTZ CREEK, Mich. — The Swartz Creek community gathered to remember a Revolutionary War veteran on Saturday.

The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held a military service at the Swartz Creek Cemetery for Peter Woodin.

Lieutenant Peter Woodin Jr. was born in Berkshire County Mass, in March of 1761.

During the Revolutionary War, Woodin was enrolled to join an emergency company as a Second Lieutenant.

His detachment marched from Mount Washington towards Bennington to guard the frontier while it was on alarm.

Woodin’s military career was short but impactful, only lasting two days between Oct 23 and 25, 1780 before he was honorably discharged.

After the passing of his wife Ruth Curtis in 1832, Woodin moved to Clayton Twp. in Genesee County to live with his son Emer.

Woodin passed away on April 14 1854 at 93 years old.

In 1926, Woodin was given a metal sign by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

During the ceremony, a new marker was unveiled at his burial site honoring his service and legacy.

Lieutenant Woodin was also given a 21 gun salute, and three cannon shots were fired from two period accurate artillery pieces.

Three of Woodin’s descendants attended the ceremony and were presented with a flag.

After the event, the Swartz Creek Area Historical Society unveiled their new military veterans room.
