Michelle Obama sparked discussion at SXSW London this week after making a blunt observation about confidence, power, and who gets to feel like they belong in elite spaces.

Speaking during a live recording of her IMO podcast with her brother Craig Robinson, the former First Lady said that after years spent in some of the world’s most influential rooms, she has noticed a stark difference in how people perceive their own legitimacy.

“There are so many people like me, like you: women, minorities, folks who aren't supposed to be at these tables,†Obama told the audience, per The Guardian. “They are sitting around thinking that they're impostors.â€

She then delivered the line that quickly spread across social media and news headlines: “I've never heard a white man talk about impostor syndrome. I haven't met one.â€

At SXSW London, Obama expanded on the idea that many people entering influential spaces feel pressure to prove they belong. She said part of her goal was to “demystify†what happens behind closed doors at powerful institutions and challenge assumptions that everyone at the table feels completely certain of themselves.

The conversation also shifted to parenting. Obama argued that overly involved parenting styles can unintentionally undermine children’s confidence by signaling that they cannot solve problems independently.

Reflecting on her own upbringing, she described a household where responsibility was introduced early, and children were expected to navigate challenges on their own.

“If we helicopter a bit too much,†Obama said, “you're kind of signaling to them that ‘you can't do this without me.'â€

The comments fit into a broader discussion Obama has been having recently about self-confidence, resilience, and navigating public scrutiny. Those themes have also surfaced in recent episodes of IMO, including a widely discussed conversation with WNBA star Angel Reese. During that appearance, Obama praised Reese for maintaining her composure amid intense criticism and media attention.

“You are handling yourself beautifully,†Obama told Reese on the podcast. “You are a special, special person.â€
