Rhode Island’s Day of Portugal celebration will return June 5 to 7 to downtown Providence with live music, cultural performances, Portuguese food vendors, family-friendly activities, and a parade.

“It is not only a celebration of our Portugalidade (Portugueseness), but also a tribute to the generations of sacrifice that helped build the great nation we share today,†said Orlando Mateus, chairman of the Board of Directors for the RI Day of Portugal. “May it remind us of our history, strengthen our unity, and inspire us to carry our heritage forward with pride.â€

The festivities will kick off at 6 p.m. Friday, June 5, when the State House of Rhode Island will welcome community leaders and the public for a special ceremony aimed at showcasing the Portuguese culture and the many contributions Portuguese-Americans have made to the Ocean State. A free reception will follow.

“As Rhode Island and our nation mark 250 years of independence, we celebrate not only the founding of our nation, but also the generations of people whose cultures, traditions, and hard work have shaped who we are today,†Mateus said. “Gathering each year at the State House reminds us that our strength has always come from the diverse communities that make up our state, including the vibrant Portuguese American community whose contributions continue to enrich Rhode Island and its future.â€

Year-round community effort and volunteer support sustain RI Day of Portugal celebration

The Rhode Island Day of Portugal celebrations are organized by community leaders and volunteers who work throughout the year to preserve and promote Portuguese culture in Rhode Island.

This year’s committee is led by James Ferreira.

“Events like these are only possible because of the continued support of our sponsors, community partners, and dedicated volunteers,†Mateus said. “Their commitment helps ensure the success of each celebration and allows traditions like Rhode Island Day of Portugal to continue for generations to come. Through their support, the community is able to share its music, food, traditions, and history while strengthening connections between generations and welcoming new audiences to experience Portuguese culture.
