AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The Amarillo Economic Development Corporation hosted leaders from Hansa-Express Logistics GmbH today as the German company looks at Amarillo as a possible location for its U.S. operations.
Hansa-Express Logistics is a family-owned German company that works in defense logistics. Company leaders are exploring opportunities to grow business on both sides of the Atlantic, including in the United States.
The company is part of a German defense network made up of about 200 companies through the UVN Ruestungscluster association.
AEDC officials say the visit comes as Germany prepares to spend about $450 billion in the coming years on defense. The investment is meant to strengthen Germany's defense capabilities. However, Germany is not requiring all of that work to be done inside the country, which could open the door for companies to manufacture in the U.S.
AEDC says its role is to help European companies make a smooth move into Amarillo. That includes connecting companies with local defense industry partners, workforce programs and possible production sites.
Those sites could include repurposed military hangars or new construction locations. AEDC officials also point to Amarillo's access to rail lines and major highways as an advantage for companies that need strong logistics options.
According to AEDC, communities hoping to attract German companies need five key things: strong connections, a skilled workforce, a good location, meaningful incentives and business support.
AEDC says Amarillo offers all of those, especially when it comes to infrastructure, available workers and its location.
Officials say interest from European aerospace and defense suppliers is growing, and Amarillo wants companies in Germany's defense network to know the city is ready to support them.
That network includes companies such as Hensoldt, Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Diehl Defence, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, Rohde & Schwarz, Heckler & Koch and Airbus Defence and Space.
AEDC says many European defense suppliers are considering U.S. production sites, and Amarillo remains a strong option.
