Suspect dead after opening fire near White House security checkpoint, Secret Service says
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Secret Service says a man who opened fire near a White House security checkpoint is dead. It was the third incidence of gunfire in the vicinity of President Donald Trump in the past month. The agency says in a statement Saturday that a preliminary investigation found the man was near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue when he pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing. Its officers returned fire. The suspect died later at a hospital. A bystander also was shot. Trump was at the White House at the time. Secret Service said he was not “impacted.â€
Russia uses hypersonic Oreshnik missile in mass attack on Kyiv
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russia used the powerful hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile in a mass attack on Kyiv. It marks the third time the missile, which is capable of carrying nuclear or conventional warheads, has been used in Ukraine. Russia struck the city of Bila Tserkva in Kyiv region with the missile, Zelenskyy said. The target was not immediately clear. Russia launched an intense missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight, destroying or damaging buildings across the center of the Ukrainian capital. Local authorities report at least two people have been killed and over 83 have been wounded.
A suicide bombing near a railway track in southwest Pakistan kills at least 23 people
QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle near a railway track as a passenger train passed through the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta, killing at least 23 people and wounding over 70 others, officials said. The force of the explosion caused two of the train cars to overturn and catch fire, sending thick black smoke into the air, according to footage shared online Sunday. The attack happened in an area where security forces are usually stationed, badly damaging several nearby buildings and smashing vehicles parked along the road. Doctors at local hospitals said they had received the wounded, with 20 in critical condition.
40,000 people under evacuation orders for a chemical tank leak in Southern California
About 40,000 people are under evacuation orders and schools have shut down in Southern California due to a hazardous chemical leak. Officials say a storage tank began leaking methyl methacrylate, a chemical used in making plastic parts. The tank overheated Thursday at an aerospace plastics facility in Garden Grove, where evacuations were initially ordered. Officials expanded evacuation orders Friday to include parts of Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park and Westminster after failing to stop the leak overnight. The department says the information about the prosecutions is “partisan propaganda.†The purge of news releases documenting criminal charges, convictions and sentencings is the latest step by the Trump administration to dramatically rewrite the history of the Capitol assault. On that day more than five years ago, hundreds of supporters of Republican President Donald Trump stormed the building in an effort to halt the congressional certification of his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.
Building under construction in Philippines collapses, leaving 1 dead and 21 trapped
ANGELES, Philippines (AP) — A nine-story building under construction in a city north of the Philippine capital has collapsed, leaving at least one Malaysian tourist dead and 21 workers trapped. Officials say the building fell before dawn on Sunday. Two trapped workers have been located alive but can’t be immediately rescued. At least 24 workers managed to escape or were rescued after the building crumbled. The collapse occurred in a crowded neighborhood near a former U.S. Air Force base. Nearly 200 police officers are assisting in the rescue efforts, which will continue until everyone is accounted for, according to regional police director Brig. Gen. Jess Mendez.
Iran’s soccer federation says team’s World Cup base camp has been moved to Mexico from the US
PHOENIX (AP) — The president of the governing body of Iranian soccer says the nation's World Cup training base has been moved to Mexico from the United States after getting approval from FIFA. Mehdi Taj, president of the Iran Football Federation, announced the decision in a statement issued by the federation's media relations official. FIFA has not confirmed the move. Iran had been scheduled to train in Tucson, Arizona. The federation says the team wil be based in Tijuana, Mexico, just south of San Diego. This year's World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19 and will be co-hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
Gunmen open fire in 2 separate attacks in Honduras, killing at least 25 people
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — Gunmen have opened fire in two separate attacks on the Honduran coast, killing at least 25 people, including six police officers. Police say the first incident took place Thursday at a plantation in Trujillo. The Public Prosecutor’s Office said 19 people were killed there. The region has been the site of a decades-long agrarian conflict. In the second attack, assailants opened fire on police in Omoa near the Guatemalan border, killing six officers, including a senior officer.
