At a time when global tensions shape much of the conversation around Iran, a one-night rare U.S. presentation of a centuries-old Persian Sufi work offers a thoughtful cultural counterpoint as MTO Zendeh Delan presents “The Conference of the Birds†on Thursday, May 28, at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre.

Rooted in Persian poetic tradition, “The Conference of the Birds†is a contemplative presentation of self-discovery, inspired by timeless themes of searching, transformation and inner awakening. Drawing from a profound literary and spiritual lineage, it invites audiences into an experience centered on reflection, connection and shared humanity.

The work offers a powerful counterpoint to conflict – highlighting a deep cultural and spiritual heritage grounded in unity, love and introspection. The Los Angeles presentation is especially poignant, as the city is home to the largest Persian diaspora in the United States, making the program a cultural touchstone and a bridge across communities.

Inspired by the enduring allegory of a collective journey toward truth, “The Conference of the Birds†explores universal questions of identity, loss, hope and meaning. Through poetry, music and storytelling, it creates space for reflection and invites audiences to engage with a work that is culturally rooted and universally relevant.

“'The Conference of the Birds' is a presentation of self-discovery,†said Omid Asgari, musical director of MTO Zendeh Delan. “We hope to offer Los Angeles audiences an experience that is reflective, meaningful and grounded in compassion.â€

“Zendeh Delan,†meaning “awakened hearts,†is an international ensemble of students of Sufism who share the practice through poetry, music and the meditative movement of Sama, under the guidance of professor Nader Angha of the MTO Shahmaghsoudi School of Islamic Sufism. Blending traditional Persian musical modes with contemporary influences, the ensemble creates a layered artistic experience that bridges cultures and genres.

Doors open at 6 p.m.; the program runs from 7-9 p.m. Tickets start at $89.34. The Wilshire Ebell Theatre is located at 4401 W. Eighth St. For information, visit ebellofla.org/events/mto-zendeh-delan-presents-the-conference-of-the-birds.
