The United Nations has declared a climate emergency ahead of the COP26 summit in Glasgow, warning that the world is on the brink of catastrophe.
In a statement, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on governments, businesses, and citizens to take urgent action to address the climate crisis.
Guterres urged countries to commit to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, phase out coal, end fossil fuel subsidies, and invest in renewable energy.
The UN’s declaration comes as world leaders prepare to meet at the COP26 conference to discuss global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.
