The United Nations Security Council approved a resolution on Friday calling for a 30-day ceasefire in Syria to allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid and the evacuation of the sick and wounded. The resolution excludes operations against groups considered to be terrorist organizations, such as the Islamic State and Al Qaeda.

Russia, a key supporter of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, had objected to the wording of the ceasefire resolution, leading to delays in the approval process. The vote was finally passed after several amendments were made to address Russian concerns.

The ceasefire is intended to provide much-needed relief to civilians in Eastern Ghouta, a rebel-held suburb of the capital Damascus that has been under heavy bombardment in recent weeks. The situation in Eastern Ghouta has been described as a “hell on earth” by the United Nations.

The resolution also calls for all parties to “immediately lift the sieges on populated areas including in Eastern Ghouta, Yarmouk, Foua and Kefraya.” It further demands that all parties “demilitarize humanitarian convoys and ensure the protection of humanitarian and medical personnel.”

The approval of the ceasefire resolution comes after days of intense debate and diplomatic negotiations. It remains to be seen whether all parties involved in the conflict will abide by the terms of the resolution and allow for the much-needed humanitarian assistance to reach those in need.
