European Union imposes sanctions on Belarus over migrant crisis
The European Union has decided to impose sanctions on Belarus for its role in creating a migrant crisis on its border with Poland. This comes after thousands of migrants, mainly from the Middle East, were encouraged by Belarus to breach the border and seek entry into the EU.
The EU accuses Belarus of using migrants as a weapon to retaliate against EU sanctions imposed on the country for human rights abuses and cracking down on opposition groups.
The sanctions include travel bans and asset freezes on individuals and entities involved in the crisis. The EU has also decided to provide more financial and technical assistance to Poland and other countries affected by the crisis.
Belarus has denied any wrongdoing and has accused the EU of exacerbating the crisis by not allowing the migrants to seek asylum.
